Events and Activities Committee
About This Committee
AWL believes that informed women lawyers are powerful women lawyers. We organise talks, workshops, and conferences that address both professional skills and the substantive legal issues that affect our members and the communities they serve. The Events Committee works to set up these virtual and in-person events for the benefit of women in general, and women lawyers specifically.
But AWL also recognises that a strong organisation is built on strong relationships — and relationships are built over more than just CPD points. The Events Committee is equally responsible for AWL's social calendar: the dinners, gatherings, and informal occasions where members and non-members alike can connect, relax, and find community in a profession that can be isolating. Both kinds of events matter. Both are part of what AWL does.
Our Events Programme
AWL's events span five broad categories, running across the calendar year in a mix of in-person, virtual or hybrid formats.
-
Flagship events: Flagship events include AWL’s biennial international women lawyers conference. The 5th IWLC was held in February 2026 at the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC), drawing speakers from six countries. The 6th IWLC is planned for 2028.
-
Professional Development: AWL organises talks and workshops throughout the year on topics spanning legal practice, career development, technology and the law, gender-based violence, and substantive legal issues affecting women and marginalised communities. The Events Committee also coordinates memtorship sessions that connect junior members with experienced practitioners — covering everything from navigating chambers, to building a practice, to managing work-life sustainability in a demanding profession.
-
Advocacy and public interest: AWL participates in and co-organises events with coalition partners on advocacy priorities, as well as appearing as speakers and panellists at external events, podcast recordings, media briefings, and broadcast appearances to amplify its advocacy positions. The Events Committee coordinates AWL's participation in these engagements in collaboration with the Social Media Committee.
-
Social and community events: AWL's social events are as much a part of its DNA as its advocacy work. Throughout the year, the Events Committee organises informal gatherings — festive celebrations, casual dinners, and member socials — where the AWL community can connect outside of a professional setting. These events are open to members and non-members alike, and are a natural entry point for those considering joining AWL.
-
External collaboration: AWL co-organises and participates in events with partner organisations including the Malaysian Bar, AIAC, EMPOWER, JAG, MCRA, and international bodies such as APWLD. These collaborations expand the reach of AWL's events and create platforms for cross-sectoral exchange between legal professionals, civil society, policymakers, and international advocates.

Get involved
AWL members who enjoy event planning, logistics, programming, or simply want to help bring the AWL community together are welcome to join the Events Committee. No specialist legal background is required — enthusiasm, organisational skills, and a genuine interest in building community are what matter most.
